— PROJECT DESCRIPTION
From car manufacturer to mobility brand:
the VW Digital Design System
Volkswagen is evolving from a pure car manufacturer into a provider of modern mobility services and intelligent devices. The comprehensive rebranding was the logical consequence of this strategic reorientation. The brand design, visual language, corporate identity and communication style were completely overhauled within just nine months.

In this project, I actively supported the mobile design team in setting up their design system. As part of the brand relaunch in 2019, the brand language and the UI/UX design of all apps were also consolidated.

New Brand UI Design
In my role, I was instrumental in co-developing the UI design and UX principles for the new brand, setting up the digital design system and documenting and visualising the results in a style guide. The app guideline contains detailed UX patterns and components that form the basis of Volkswagen's app design system.
A so-called One App was to bundle various digital services into one application. As part of this, the new brand language came into its own and a centralised design system was needed across different teams.
Module and component catalogue, style guide and application examples - I was given comprehensive support with this task.

Components smartly organised
My task was not only to provide a comprehensive set of several hundred components as a library, but also to categorise them and make them available online for users of the VW design system. Frontify, a now well-known solution for offering brand assets via a website, came into play later. The seamless integration of assets via the Sketch plugin is particularly helpful, as it eliminates the need for a separate intermediate step and the need to experiment with assets.

The design was continuously tested with motion prototypes to get a feel for brand language and haptics before implementation... Joy of use has become an important aspect.
